Emerging Trends in Instructional Design
The latest trend is microlearning, which is defined by the Association of Talent Development (n.d.) as learning in small, repetitive chunks (ATD, n.d.). Microlearning is trending due to the cut in time and the efficiency of learning. With an everchanging world, microlearning is becoming the convenient solution for the workplace. Examples of microlearning include short videos, interactive assessments, and games (ATD, n.d.). Gamification of learning has been a popular trend post COVID, as it retains attention of learners while solidifying basic concepts. Kahoot and Blooket are popular educational games that many teachers, including myself, use for quick reviews. With microlearning, interactive and hands-on activities work best, as “employees can practice and apply skills in a no-pressure environment,” (ATD, n.d.). Companies such as Google and Duolingo use interactive activities to solidify learning. The same goes for students; classes such as Chemistry and Biology use these hands-on activities to engage students and boost retention of the material taught.
Another trend to emerge is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, specifically in creating curriculum, assessments, lessons, etc. William (2026) states that the benefits of using Generative AI include saving time, supplementing non-classroom learning, and interactive classroom discussions (William, 2026). The use of AI can boost student engagement and content, which is crucial to student retention and memory.
These trends can affect the field of instructional design by the popularization of microlearning and AI. Ultimately, the field of instructional design can modernize and have improved instructional solutions if these trends are applied correctly and ethically.
